Location: Foinikia, Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Design and production: ioarchstudio
Information: Inspired by the female body and designed on Rhinocerus 3D software, the main goal of this project was to implement new ways of carpentry that make use of digital tools, in order to create a 3D piece to exhibit in our showroom. It essentially served as a research piece that allowed our studio to explore how digital resources can reinforce the process of construction, in addition to the design. From us to us.
Combined techniques were used to achieve the final result. CNC machine-cutting was used for the mold, followed by individual carpentry work on each piece, to reproduce the exact curves depicted in the digital software.
The aspired sensation of this piece is an enhancement of its smoothness and coherence, intensified by the proximity you are approaching it. The closer you get, the more eager the desire to feel its surface.
The wood used was massif in order to create a sculptural piece inspired both by architectural tropes but also natural patterns and rhythms. The unity of the human and the natural element though would be defined with the orientation combining as mentioned before: natural hip-like curves and thus an embodied extension from the standardized 2D pattern that has been appropriated in mainstream reception pieces.
